John Gibbons Obituary, Death: Legendary High School Football Coach Dies Surrounded by Family

The high school football community is mourning the passing of John Gibbons, a legendary coach whose influence on the game and his players spanned decades. According to reports, Gibbons passed away peacefully on April 4, surrounded by his loving family.

Gibbons built a remarkable coaching legacy, most notably at Lake Catholic High School, where he led the program to back-to-back state championships in 1991 and 1992. His tenure also included eight conference titles, solidifying his reputation as one of the most successful and respected high school football coaches in the region.

He later continued his impactful career at St. Edward High School, guiding the Eagles to seven consecutive playoff appearances and a Division I state runner-up finish in 2003. Known for his passion, intensity, and deep knowledge of the game, Gibbons earned admiration from players, colleagues, and rivals alike.

Off the field, Gibbons was a devoted family man and a person of deep faith. Alongside his wife, Patty, he raised 10 children and was blessed with more than two dozen grandchildren. His love for football became a family tradition, with several of his children and relatives continuing in coaching and mentoring roles.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Gibbons was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2015.
